Allotment plots in Ross-on-Wye are leased by the Town Council to Tudorville Allotment Association who manage them on behalf of the council and sub-let them to plot holders.
We have 66 plots, with most on the main site at Wood Edge, behind the cemetery and 9 on the Walford Road site, alongside it.
The average plot size is 71 m² with the smallest 40 m² and the largest 135 m². Some members have more than one plot. We run a waiting list operated on a “first-come” basis and the average waiting time is usually less than 6 months. Most plots usually become free in the autumn and some in the spring.
There is an annual rent which is based on plot size. All members pay an annual £5.50 standing charge plus rent at 35 p/m². The smallest annual rent is just under £14 and the largest £60. We also charge new members a joining fee of £25.
All plot holders must live within the Ross Town boundary.
Most plot holders concentrate on vegetables or soft fruit, but they can grow what they want, other than ornamental trees. They are not allowed to keep chickens, bees, or livestock. They can erect a small shed (most do), a green house or polytunnel. Ponds are permitted provided they are protected.
There is water on site paid for from the members’ rent. We also have communal mowers and strimmers which authorised members can use on site. Members benefit from buying seeds through Kings Seeds with a 40% discount and most members use the scheme, giving them savings on average of nearly £29, about the cost of their annual rent. Plot holders can get trade discount at Walford Timber.
